Neighborhood Radio NETS

During emergencies, Tualatin residents may join the neighborhood radio NETS from home or anywhere in the Tualatin area. Practicing with one of the three radio NETS during non-emergencies is a great way to connect with your neighbors and prepare for an emergency that overwhelms regular communication and/or first responders.

How to Join a NET

Tualatin residents may join one or more of our neighborhood radio NETS from home for use during emergencies. You do not need to be a CERT member to join a radio NET.

Practicing the radio NET during non-emergencies is a great way to connect with your neighbors and to prepare.

There are several ways to join. Regardless of which method you use, you need to contact Tualatin CERT (see the contact form below) to let us know you want to sign up.

Option 1 - Purchase a two-way radio that does not require a license. These are known as Family Radio Service (FRS) radios or walkie-talkies. To join the FRS NET, submit a contact form to Tualatin CERT to request FRS NET membership.

Click on the button below for more details.

Option 2 – Obtain an FCC license for your family for a General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radio. There are no exams to pass to obtain this license. The license costs $35 for 10 years. Click the button below for the steps to obtain the license. To join the GMRS NET, send a contact form to Tualatin CERT and request GMRS NET membership.

Option 3 – Pass the licensing test for an FCC Amateur Radio Service license (Ham). The license costs $35 for 10 years. Go to the FCC link to learn more about those steps.  To join the Ham NET, send a contact form to Tualatin CERT and request a Ham NET membership.
